The Contemporary Punk Scene
What is Punk Rock?
Punk Rock was a movement that started in the 1970’s. Kids were become tired with music and looking for something new.
That’s when punk rock came along. It was loud, fast, and aggressive. Punk rock music exercised the bare minimum of musical talent,
it usually only consisted of a few chords. The normal punk band was comprised of a singer, electric guitar, electric bass, and a drummer.
The songs they created were very short because they were also very fast. The lyrics were angry, anti-establishment, and very political.
The singers usually didn’t have great singing voice; they spoke the lyrics in a way, sometimes shouting. The guitar parts involved fast strumming
and heavy distortion creating a very crunchy sound. The drums held a fast tempo behind the crunching guitar.
The music was very rebellious to society and its standards. This is where it punk rock goes from a genre of music to large movement. Punk Rock wasn’t just a style of music anymore; it had become a style of living. The kids wore ripped blue jeans, band tee shirts, and leather jackets with studs, patches, and pins they added themselves. They had piercing and hair dyed colors that’s were out of the ordinary like blue, green, and purple.
It was a DIY lifestyle, the DIY stood for “Do It Yourself.” A lot of those clothes they were was made or modified by them. The kids created independent labels to put music out on. They booked there own shows in bars and halls. There were no big labels involved in the scene, just small labels putting out music.
Punk in the City
New York City is where it all started. Punk rock can be traced back to the Village, where the first punk bands arose. One of the first, if not the first, was The Ramones.
They were a quartet from the city, and are innovated this sound known as punk rock. The band consisted of five guys wearing leather jackets, tight jeans, with long black hair;
it was Joey Ramone of vocals, Johnny Ramone on guitar, Dee- Dee Ramone on bass, and Marky Ramone on drums. The band was most
prominent for songs like “Blitzkrieg Bop,” “I wanna be sedated,” and “ Rock ‘n’ Roll High School.” The band was famous for playing a
small club in the village called CBGB’s.
CBGB’s is a legendary club in New York City; it had a great affect on the rise of Punk Rock. Many punk bands were made from
playing at CB’s; bands like Patti Smith, Blondie, The Stooges. The photo to the left shows the outside of the
legendary club. Much like the outside, the inside is not very pretty either, but that is what makes this place such a punk rock club.
Anarchy in the U.K.
The movement then spread over to another continent and became very popular in the United Kingdom. Malcolm McLaren,
after managing the New York Dolls, moved back to England and opened a store called SEX. The clothing was inspired by the
clothing of the punk scene in New York. Later he began to manage a band called The Swankers , who later
became know as the Sex Pistols. The band began to develop a impressive following. Some populars songs
from the band were "Anarchy in the U.K." and "God Save The Queen."
On July 4, 1976 The Ramones and The Stranglers played a club in London called Roadhouse. After this show, many bands began to
form and break out, some of the bands were The Damned, The Clash, The Adverts, Sham 69, Joy Division, and many more. In October of 1976
The Damned release the first punk single in the U.K. The Sex Pistols released "Anarchy in the U.k." the following month.
After this release the band who already been notorious, receive even more bad publicity.
The band was scheduled for a tour with The Clash, famous for songs like “London Calling”,
“Should I Stay or Should I Go”, and “ Rock the CasBah.” Due to the bad publicity many of the shows booked
for the tour had been cancelled.
Punk is dead?
Thirty years later bands are still playing punk music, sure the music has evolved a bit over time but it is much the same.
There are still kids full of angst, so the music lives on. The music has become much more popular, and is not quite as
much an underground scene as it was in the 70’s. Many punk influenced bands are even played on MTV.
In 1994, Kevin Lyman had the idea to form a tour that combined music with extreme sports. This idea came to life in
1995, it was called the VANS Warped Tour. The Vans Warped Tour is a festival that that brings a whole crowd
of the best punk bands together, NOFX, Bad Religion, The Casualties, Saves The Day, My Chemical Romance, and
other. Each band plays for about thirty minutes through out the day. The bands all tour the country together for the whole
summer. The tour goes on every summer.
Punk has become much accepted by the population, you could even call it mainstream.
Some mainstream punk bands are:
My Chemical Romance
The Used
Story of the Year
Paramore
Weezer
